Part of our guide: Condition & Descriptions · Pre-Loved Designer Fashion
You do not need to be a tailor to tell whether a dress is well made. Six quick checks will tell you most of what you need to know, whether you are in a shop or looking at photos online.
1. Fabric
Check the care label. Natural fibres and good-quality blends tend to hang and wear better than cheap synthetics. Crepe, satin and wool crepe hold shape; very thin fabrics may snag.
2. Lining
A lined dress usually hangs better and is more opaque. Check the lining is intact and not pulling away at the hem.
3. Seams
Look inside. Even stitching, neat finishes and a little seam allowance are signs of good construction. Loose threads and wobbly lines are not.
4. Hems
A good hem is even and flat. Check for dropped hems or signs of previous repairs.
5. Zips and fastenings
The zip should be smooth and flat, with no ripples. Check hooks, buttons and any belt loops.
6. How it hangs
Hold it up. A quality dress falls cleanly without twisting or pulling. In photos, look for a smooth drape rather than strain at the seams.
Red flags
- A zip that wobbles or does not lie flat.
- Seams that pucker, twist or gape.
- Fabric that pills, snags or looks tired around the underarms.
- Hems that are uneven or have been shortened poorly.
- Vague or poor-quality listing photos.
A quick test at home
When the dress arrives, try it on, sit down, lift your arms and walk around. Check the lining and seams and make sure nothing pulls or digs. Do this soon after delivery in case you need to raise an issue through Vinted.
When buying online
Ask the seller for photos of the inside, the zip and any flaws in natural light. Use our condition guide and check sizing and fit. For occasion dresses in particular see pre-loved occasionwear and what to wear to a wedding.
