Part of our guide: Pre-Loved Workwear · Pre-Loved Designer Fashion
A strong work wardrobe does not need dozens of pieces. It needs a handful of well-cut items that fit properly and mix easily. Buying pre-loved gets you better quality for less.
The first five pieces
- A tailored blazer in black or navy.
- Two pairs of trousers: one dark, one neutral.
- A dress that works with or without a jacket.
- Two good shirts or blouses in neutral tones.
- A fine-knit jumper.
Buy for fit first
Fit is the difference between polished and ordinary. Check shoulders on blazers and the waist and rise on trousers. Hems are easy to change, shoulders are not. See sizing and fit.
Check wear points
On workwear, check cuffs, collars, underarms and the seat of trousers. Ask for close-ups if needed. Our condition guide explains what to look for.
Keep a neutral base
Neutrals make everything work together. Add colour in a single piece, like a scarf or a top, so the wardrobe stays flexible.
Planning a week of outfits
With the five basic pieces you can create at least five different outfits: blazer and trousers, dress and blazer, shirt and trousers, knit and trousers, or the dress on its own. Rotate accessories to keep it fresh.
Budgeting
Set a budget per piece and favour quality over quantity. One excellent blazer is worth more than three average ones. Pre-loved lets you stretch the budget further, and you can re-sell pieces when your style changes.
Labels to try
Reiss, Hobbs, Whistles and Phase Eight are common sources of good workwear. See our label guide.
