What to Wear to a Wedding as a Guest: Pre-Loved Ideas

Wedding season brings the same question every year: what do I wear? The good news is that a wedding is the perfect reason to shop pre-loved. Guest outfits are worn once or twice, so pre-loved dresses are often in near-new condition, and the price is a fraction of the original.

Start with the dress code

Read the invitation twice. “Formal” or “black tie” means floor-length or a very smart midi. “Smart” or “cocktail” gives you more freedom. If it says “garden party” or “summer wedding”, think lighter fabrics and softer colours.

Colours and etiquette

Avoid white, ivory and cream unless the couple has said otherwise. Beyond that, it is your choice. Navy, emerald, dusty rose and deep red photograph well and work for most seasons.

Shapes that work

  • Wrap dresses suit most shapes and are easy to adjust at the waist.
  • Midi dresses are comfortable all day and look polished.
  • Jumpsuits are a stylish alternative if you want to avoid a dress.
  • Tailored co-ords work for daytime weddings and can be worn again.

What to check when buying pre-loved

Look closely at hems, underarms and zips, because those are the places that show wear after a dance floor. Ask for measurements and check the fabric: crepe and satin hold their shape, very delicate fabrics may mark easily. Our condition guide and sizing guide explain what to ask.

Guest outfit ideas by season

  • Spring: soft florals or pastel midi dresses with a light wrap.
  • Summer: satin or lightweight crepe in a colour that suits you, with block heels for lawns.
  • Autumn: deeper tones such as burgundy, forest green and navy, in crepe or velvet.
  • Winter: long sleeves or a smart jacket, with a coat that works over the top.

Accessories

Keep it simple. A good clutch, understated jewellery and comfortable shoes are worth more than lots of extras. A pashmina or tailored jacket handles chilly churches and cool evenings.

What not to wear

Avoid anything that competes with the bride, such as white or heavy bridal-style lace. Check religious or cultural expectations, and think about whether you can sit, dance and eat comfortably in the outfit.
