Workwear gets worn hard. That is why quality matters, and why buying pre-loved is such a smart move: a well-made blazer or trouser has already proved it can last, and you pay far less than the original price.
The pieces that earn their place
- A tailored blazer. The most useful item in a work wardrobe, and one of the easiest to find second-hand.
- Trousers that fit properly. Check the waist, the rise and the length. Hems are simple to alter, waistbands are not.
- A dress that works with or without a jacket. Sheath and wrap shapes in a crease-resistant fabric are the safest choice.
- Knitwear and shirting in neutral colours. These mix with everything else and keep the wardrobe flexible.
What to check before you buy
Look closely at cuffs, collars, underarms and the seat of trousers, because that is where wear shows first. Ask for photos in natural light if the listing is unclear. Our guide to reading condition and descriptions explains what to look for, and sizing and fit covers measurements.
Why quality matters most in workwear
Workwear is worn weekly, so poor quality shows fast. Pilling, shape loss and fraying are the usual problems. Premium and designer pieces tend to use better fabrics and linings, so they keep their shape for longer. Buying second-hand means someone else has already paid for the early depreciation.
Fit checklist
- Blazers: shoulder seam sits at the edge of your shoulder, and you can button it without pulling.
- Trousers: comfortable waist and a smooth seat, with a length that suits your shoes.
- Dresses: enough room to sit and move without the fabric pulling across the hips.
- Shirts: no gaping at the buttons and sleeves that reach your wrist.
Care for longevity
Hang tailoring on shaped hangers, brush wool between wears and dry clean only when needed. Read how to care for pre-loved clothes for more.
Build around neutrals
Black, navy, cream and camel give you a base that works every day, with room for the occasional colour or print. If you want a full plan, read how to build a pre-loved workwear wardrobe or the broader capsule wardrobe guide.
Labels such as Reiss, Hobbs, Whistles and Phase Eight are popular for workwear; see the label guide. Shop the boutique on Vinted for current workwear, or return to the pre-loved designer fashion hub.
