Pre-Loved Occasionwear

Occasionwear is worn once or twice and then left in a wardrobe, which is exactly why it makes such good pre-loved shopping.

Occasionwear has the best value of any category in second-hand fashion. A dress bought for one wedding or one big birthday often gets very little wear, so the pieces that come back to the market are frequently in excellent condition.

That is the story behind Rachel Buscall Boo too. Rachel buys a beautiful piece, wears it to the event, enjoys it, and then lists it on Vinted so someone else can feel extraordinary in it next. Read more on the about page.

What to look for

  • Fabric and finish. Check linings, seams and hems. Quality occasionwear holds its shape and hangs well.
  • Fit across the shoulders and bust. These are the hardest areas to alter. Hems and straps are easy to fix, structure is not. See sizing and fit.
  • Condition notes. Ask about marks, snagging or missing belts and hooks. Our condition guide lists what to ask.
  • Season and formality. A midi in a heavier crepe works for autumn weddings; lighter satin suits summer. Match the dress code on the invitation.

Occasions that suit pre-loved

Weddings, christenings, race days, birthday dinners, work parties and holidays all work well. For wedding-specific advice, read what to wear to a wedding as a guest. If you want to get more wear from a single dress, see how to style one dress five ways.

Making occasionwear work harder

The best occasion pieces are not one-wear wonders. Choose shapes that can be restyled, in colours that suit you, and fabrics that can handle a full day. A dress that works with a jacket, a wrap and different shoes becomes three or four outfits instead of one. Our guide to styling one dress five ways shows how.

Questions to ask the seller

  1. Has it been worn once or many times, and for what kind of event?
  2. Are there marks around the hem, underarms or zip?
  3. Does it have a lining, and is it intact?
  4. Can you send a photo in natural light?

Occasion by occasion

  • Weddings and christenings: look for tailored midis, wrap dresses or elegant jumpsuits in a colour that is not white or cream.
  • Dinners and parties: satin, sequins and structured co-ords all work, depending on the venue.
  • Race days and daytime events: a well-cut midi with a structured jacket is usually safe.
  • Holidays: lightweight dresses that travel well and do not crease.
